We asked where drivers speed the most in Northborough. Our chief of police weighs in.
Earlier this month, Patch asked Northborough drivers to "sound off" about where people tend to speed the most in town. Among the answers were Davis Ave. and Maple Street. According to Northborough Police Chief Mark Leahy, since Jan. 1 of this year, 1,278 speeding citations have been issued in Northborough. And in 2010, 1,399 were issued citations for speeding in Northborough, up to 1,773 in 2011. "The most heavily enforced streets are Church Street and Davis Street," said Leahy. So where do the cops hide with the radar guns? Leahy, of course, won't divulge the officers' favorite spots, but added, "they are driven by complaints from residents. "

The $1.5 billion bill helps build infrastructure that strengthens the state’s economy over the long term, governor says.
Gov. Deval Patrick called the $1.5 billion transportation bond bill he signed Thursday what the state needs to strengthen its economy and "quality of life for the long term.” “Our transportation infrastructure had suffered from years of neglect, so this administration started rebuilding roads, rails and bridges in every corner of our state and creating thousands of jobs," Patrick said after he enacted the bill, which enjoyed the strong support of the Legislature, passing the House by a vote of 150-2 on July 31, the last day of the session. The bond bill ensures funding for many projects already under way and allots money for the planning of future improvements across the state. It also continues funding for the final year of 2008's five-…

Story submitted by Robert P. Ellis of the Northborough Historical Society. Could the brick building at 10 School St. be called the most historical building still standing in Northborough? Isn’t the house at 312 Church St., for example, more historical? There at a meeting in 1744 one section of Westborough (itself a former part of the earlier town of Marlborough) was formally designated as that town’s new North Precinct. This decision led to the independence of the precinct in 1766 and the status of Town of Northborough in 1775. Probably only the Town Hall, which burned in 1985, however, held more significant community events. The fact that it originated as one of Northborough’s district schools explains the name of the street. Northborough…

A Shrewsbury man died this morning when his truck crashed near the Church Street exit on I-290 eastbound.
A Shrewsbury man died this morning when his pickup truck collided with a tree off I-290 near the Church Street exit, police said. Russell Eaton, 46, of Shrewsbury was pronounced dead at the scene. At 6:30 this morning, troopers from the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Holden responded to the crash on Route 290 eastbound in Northborough. Eaton was the only occupant of the vehicle, police said. A preliminary investigation by Trooper Sean Healy showed that the 2004 GMC pickup truck operated by Eaton, 46, was travelling east at a high rate of speed when he veered off into a tree. The investigation also indicated no signs that Eaton applied his breaks, said police. The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, …

Davis Street has 3 speed limits when traveling from 135 to rt 20 and of course visa-versa. Many times cars travel in excess of 40 mph in the 35 mph zone. It is a good thing that the police are active on this street. However, it seems to me that the speed limit should be brought down for the safety of the residents.   more ›
