Sheriff’s Inmate Community Service Program provides more than $2 million dollars in savings for Worcester County communities.
Submitted by Kimberly Roy, director of community programs, office of the Worcester County Sheriff Responding to a request from Director of School Facilities Mike Gorman, Worcester County Sheriff Lewis G. Evangelidis recently provided free inmate labor through the Sheriff’s Inmate Community Service Program to Algonquin Regional High School to complete some much needed interior painting of the high school Guidance Department as well as the painting and trim work of 15 classrooms. In addition to this most recent project, the inmate work crews have previously completed three other extensive interior painting projects throughout ARHS providing the school with well over $40,000 in total savings. Part two of our series on the Gay Straight Alliance at Algonquin talks to teens about their issues of coming out.
Two weeks ago, Northborough Patch met with the Gay Straight Alliance at Algonquin Regional High School. After spending some time with these teens, we decided it best to break our coverage down into parts. Part one discussed the GSA itself, and the difference it is making at the school. And here, we learn about the struggles teens face in "coming out" to their friends, family and peers. There were 35 or so members who attended the meeting that day, but a handful agreed to stay with Patch and share their stories. Mostly, coming out stories. Algonquin's David McGovern doesn't slack off when it comes to chasing success.
Leaving a legacy behind is all the motivation senior David McGovern needs to finish the season strong. “My biggest goal is to carry on a tradition of success,” says McGovern. “The banners that stick out to a soccer player the most in our gym are the back-to-back state championships.” A lifelong passion for soccer has driven this Tomahawk to perform at his best, because chances are his playing days at Algonquin may never be replaced. Algonquin students and their parents joined the Relay for Life recently, raising lots of dough for the American Cancer Society.
On May 13 and 14, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life took place at the Algonquin track, where nearly 500 students and their family and friends raised more than $63,000 for cancer research. Elizabeth Cahill, Katie Wilson, Meredish Murphy, Emily Ellis and Christine Sgueglia were among the main organizers of the event.
