UPDATE: This Goose Has Lost His Gaggle (And Doesn't Seem to Care) [VIDEO]

Employees at McKesson Medical-Surgical and FedEx are wondering if the goose outside their front door is lost.

Update, Monday, Feb. 19: Doreen Laporte, who originally alerted us to the goose, reported, "Well, he was here up through Sunday. When we came in on Monday, he was gone and we haven’t seen him since. Good news is…..we didn’t find any feathers either!" Original post: Employees at McKesson Medical-Surgical are worried that a goose outside their front door is either injured, depressed or lost. A goose—which they've named "Petey—has been "living" outside their entrance through the recent blizzard, and continues to do so. They give Petey lots of carbs. In fact, his name is Petey because of the sheer volume of pita bread he gets. He's also got a water dish, and he stands (and sleeps) on one foot. He roams only a few feet around this dish, which …

The best way to get a goose to say in one spot is to feed him lots of carbs. Wouldn't you stay if someone was feeding you free food?   more ›

(Mangy) Fox on the Run: Leave Them Alone—They Won't Hurt You

Fox sightings have become fairly common in the Northborough police log. Have you seen one?

In May, Craig Cressey contacted MassWildlife with concerns about a fox. A fox that was visiting him fairly frequently. Cressey lives on the third floor of the Avalon apartment complex in Northborough, which overlooks a small retention pond, and he had noticed on several occasions a fox visiting the area, presumably to hunt for rodents. An avid hiker and nature lover, he's trekked up mountains throughout country, during which he has seen and been approached by many different animals, from marmots to to moose to mountain goats. Although the fox appeared to be acting healthy, Cressey said, his "appearance seems less than healthy."  "I first started seeing this fox in March," he said. " I have seen him on several occasions as he wanders around…

By the Numbers

Cop Stats: (Animal) Calls of the Wild

We share the Earth with other creatures, and sometimes they drop by our property. Here are the statistics on animal calls in Northborough.

It's summer, and the police log gives way to more residents calling about black bears near their pool, barking dogs, ducks in the road, foxes and coyotes in the yard, and moose at the gas station. OK, the moose reference isn't true, but the rest are. According to statistics kept by the Northborough Police Department, the number of "animal calls" in 2010 was 108 and that number took a dip in 2011 with 80 calls. In light of the recent incident that resulted in a policeman shooting a family dog in Texas, we asked Chief Mark Leahy how Northborough police deals with animal calls in our recent "Live Chat with the Chief." Leahy said that his department is well equipped to respond to such calls, and takes every possible step to make sure the …

Bear With Him, on Hudson Street

A Hudson Street resident awoke Wednesday morning to find a black bear hanging out in his backyard.

George Maloney says he sees plenty of deer; his house on Hudson Street abuts acres of thick woods, and wildlife is no stranger to the property. While deer, turkeys, ducks and squirrels may be prevalent, bears are not. On Wednesday, early morning, Maloney stood on his back porch and did a double take when he realized a black bear was standing only yards away between his garage and above-ground pool. In his five years living there, he hadn't seen one before. "I just sat and watched him for a while and then saw him walk away," said Maloney. "I called the police. I figured I would tell someone. I wasn't scared, but I certainly wasn't going to go near it. He was just sitting there. He was roughly 200 pounds." When police arrived, the bear was …

They like the birdfeeders. My cousin who lives in Hubbardston had his 4 yr. old Grandson outside in the yard with him when his Grandson said "look Grampy a Bear". Not thinking he'd turn around and see an actual bear, there it was 20 yards away! It came back 3 times more that month and he had to shoot it.   more ›
