South of Broad by Pat Conroy - you never see it coming and he's such a rich writer that you feel a vacuum when the book ends. Any of Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon novels - intrigue, art, mystery, you cannot put the book down! ANYTHING by Jennifer Weiner - as said above, her style transcends "chick lit" and brings her characters to life such that you would swear you have met them.   more ›

Dream Big—Read! And Win Stuff

Kids can start picking up their bags of summer reading at the library, and win prizes for the more books they read.

The Dream Big—Read! program kicks off on June 25 at the Northborough Free Library. _ The Summer Reading Bags can be picked up starting on June 25, and the program ends on Aug. 18. Sign up at the library and then visit the Children's Room to pick up the bag. During the program, children are urged to keep track of the books that have been read or that are read to them to to earn raffle tickets and prizes. For every two books, a raffle ticket is earned. After five books, as well as 20, prizes are handed out.  _Visit here for more information. _

Ways to Avoid the Summer Slide

On June 22, Northborough students will be waving goodbye to their teachers, classmates and bus drivers until September. It is important though for students to keep math and reading skills fresh over the summer months to avoid any regression.

Students will have been hard at work for 180 days of school by the time summer break arrives. They have all learned new skills and grown in many ways during that time. They need the mental break and the time to be just kids during the lazy days of summer. Having two months off from the structure of a school day, where math and reading is not necessarily a daily activity anymore, can actually send some students sliding backwards in those skills. How can parents help their children avoid the summer slide?
