Principal Tom Mead gave an update on the recent security upgrades at the high school.
The U.S. Secret Service, along with local police and fire departments, were at Algonquin Regional High School last months. The school also had a recent lockdown. Both were part of the high school's commitment to updating and improving security systems and measures at Algonquin. The school had always maintained safety and security, but as with most schools around the country since the Sandy Hook tragedy, re-examined it effectiveness and evaluated where it needed improvement. Mead, Facilities Manager Mike Gorman, along with Christine Johnson, assistant superintendent for the Northborough-Southborough public schools, coordinate with other local officials, conduct drills and target improvement points. Principal Tom Mead recently updated the school committee on security improvements at Algonquin.
"We continue to be proactive in the area of school security," ARHS Principal Tom Mead told the Regional School Committee at a recent meeting, as well as an email that was sent out to all parents with students at the school. Not unlike many schools across the country, the Sandy Hook shootings prompted many to re-assess and tighten up many procedures and systems. Mead said that Facilities Manager Mike Gorman has been instrumental in shepherding in this greater increase in security, working with vendors and making sure everything is "up to speed." "Some systems are partly in place, and some we were able to complete," he said. The "main entry doors" are locked during the day after allowing staff and students in before 7:30 a.m. The other …

So moved by the Newtown shootings, Rick Haylon, set up an endowment fund, with help from his sister.
When Rick Haylon returned from the funeral of six-year-old Ben Wheeler, one of the shooting victims in the Newtown elementary school massacre, he was moved, like so many others, by not only the tragedy but the response. Trinity Church, which Newtown resident Haylon attends, was packed and overflowing for Wheeler's funeral, with some 150 people spilling out to the front lawn, standing throughout the two-hour service. "All of you, and friends from throughout our lives, have reached out to us with thoughts and prayers and offers to help," wrote Haylon to a list of friends following the service. "This has been so much appreciated. However, the urge to send food and teddy bears, while welcome now, will not address the very critical long-term …
The Northborough schools are not alone in discussing its security procedures in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school tragedy.
According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, schools that had previously had an "open door" policy quickly became locked facilities requiring visitors get buzzed in following the Connecticut shooting tragedy. Boston expanded its security at schools, as did towns such as Natick, Winchester and Medford. Dr. Charles Gobron, superintendent of schools in Northborough, said that while no safety plans were altered immediately, the tragedy prompted the school system to review safety plans, tighten security measures and "work together to reassure parents that their children are safe at school." "It's been quite a week," Gobron told Patch on Wednesday. "We do enjoy a wonderful relationship with both the Northborough and Southborough police …

Northborough police posted this statement on its Facebook page Monday. Given the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, CT, last Friday, this is an update on steps that we are taking to reassure our students, parents and staff in Northborough schools. A uniformed Northborough Police Officer with a marked police cruiser was assigned to each of our schools at dismissal time last Friday. The intention was to calm fears and remind our parents that all was well here. This presence was very well received by all concerned. Superintendent Gobron and I believed that a weekend of intense media coverage would yield a significant number of nervous or uneasy students, parents and staff come Monday morning. With Dr. Gobron's concurrence, a uniformed …
