Generator at the Melican School Will Provide Energy for the Town

In a state of emergency, the new generator being installed at the Melican School will serve as power for the town's main shelter site.

A new generator at the Melican Middle School won't just power the store; it'll be a source of power for the town during an emergency.  A warrant article to replace the old, inefficient generator at the Melican school was approved by voters during the April 2012 town meeting, for $400,000. And according to an update given at the Northborough-Southborough School Committee, the replacement is in process. The concrete pad for the generator has been poured, and the underground work has been completed. Cheryl Levesque, business manager for the schools, said the generator is on order and installation is tentatively planned for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.  "The replacement generator will power the school, which serves as the town's …

I agree the first paragraph is a bit confusing. However it was discussed in length at last years town meeting, that the need for a new generator was due to that the current one could not power all of the school. Which is necessary for an emergency shelter.   more ›

Declining Federal Funds Drive School Budget Increase

Superintendent Charles Gobron said that although the budget shows an increase for 2013, he's satisfied and meets the needs of the students.

"This year has been a particularly exciting year," said Superintendent of Schools Charles Gobron. "I have enjoyed being superintendent more than any other year because of the excitement around the cirriculum and instruction. We are a district on the move, despite economic restraints." Those restraints come in the form of a lot less federal aid for FY2013, Gobron explained as part of his presentation on the preliminary school budget to the Northborough School Committee. Gobron stressed that the budget was just that: preliminary, and various adjustments and factors always come into play before the final is submitted for Town Meeting approval. The FY2013 budget for the K-8 Northborough public schools of $19,672,524 is a 5.18 percent increase …

Green Repair Complete at the Melican School

The new boilers are blaring at the Melican School.

Thanks to a grant from the Massachusetts Building Authority, the boiler project at the Melican Middle School is now completed. Up and running since Sept. 11, the new energy-efficient boiler system was installed for just over $309,000. "It's state of the art," said Cheryl Levesque, business director for the school district. "If you had only seen the old room, and now see the new room. It's very exciting." The main goals of the MSBA’s Green Repair Program include improving learning environments for students and teachers, reduce energy use, and generate cost savings for districts. The program is for the repair or replacement of roofs, windows, and/or boilers in schools that are otherwise structurally, functionally, and educationally sound. …

Rachel's Challenge at Melican Middle School

The popular anti-bullying campaign visits Melican Middle School on Nov. 1.

Rachel Scott was the first student killed in the 1999 Columbine High School attacks. Out of the grief, Scott's family developed the now nationally recognized Rachel's Challenge, which aims to "inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion." On Monday, Dec. 5, there are Rachel's Challenge presentations in the afternoon and evening at the Melican Middle School for students and their families. Note—this event was originally scheduled for Nov. 1, but was postponed due to the storm. Rachel’s family realized the power of their daughter’s written messages about kindness and compassion as well as the impact she …
