Town Asks Legislators, "Make Our Priorities Your Priority"

State representatives visited the Board of Selectmen to discuss the town's annual priority list. Money for special education and roads tops this year's list.

To avoid having important issues get bogged down in a sea of requests, Northborough has taken to—for the past four years or so—creating a "legislative list of priorities." During the budgeting season each year, the Board of Selectmen and administration fine tunes a list of what they deem the most important for the town in order. They compile a detailed letter, mail it off to the town's representatives and senators, and organize a sit-down, which happened at the board meeting on Monday night. Sens. Public Hearing on School Budget Brings No Public Comments

Next year's budget marks a new activity fee, increases in SPED education and the potential loss of teacher jobs.

After a delay in the meeting time due to a high school science display, the Regional School Committee opened up its regular meeting, starting with a public hearing on the budget for fiscal 2013. Superintendent Charles Gobron read, line by line, the proposed budget, which totals $18,525,416, a 5.14 percent increase over the fiscal 2012 budget. Following the reading, no one raised their hands for questions or comments. Committee member Lynne Winter, questioned the validity of the new activity fee included in the budget, adding that "there were questions posed to me on this. There has been concern on the activity fee. People have been asking." Winter asked if the school had the authority to impose a flat fee on something that "might not apply…

A fee is a self imposed tax and has not been voted upon by citizens. This may make it illegal. By the very statement that he had to check into this by Mr. Gobron this tells me that this is not very clear about the school committees legality in this matter. The question really is about what the money is used for. Me thinks that it is probably something which should be included in the budget.   more ›
