State To End Program Placing Homeless Families in Northborough Motel

The program has placed families in one Northborough motel.

The state Dept. of Housing and Community Development plans to end a program that places homeless families in hotels, including one in Woburn, according to the Boston Globe. The program, which started during the 1980s, would end by June 30, 2014.  According to the most recent state figures, Northborough housed about 30 families in the EconoLodge in 2011. This figure includes 48 children. With the closing of the program in 2013, the state plans to bolster efforts to find permanent housing and prevent homelessness, according to the Globe. However, housing advocates fear permanent housing for program participants may never be found, according to the Globe.
