VIDEO: Residents Declare Victory; No More Multi-Family Developments in Business East

After a collective effort led by neighbors who live in the Business East District of Northborough, votes at Town Meeting have changed two bylaws.

Last week, through the efforts of a strong-minded group of residents led by Carol Chione, two citizens petitions passed that will reverse building standards in the bylaws pertaining to Business East in Northborough.  With the approval of warrant articles 48 and 49 at Town Meeting, multifamily development and horizontal mixed-use are no longer allowed by special permit in the Business East zoning district, which includes 81 parcels. "I am very pleased with the outcome," said Chione in her reaction to the vote, on Northborough Patch. "Pleased that numerous citizens took their time to vote, in hopes, to make a change. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: More Concern Over Main Street Build

A resident says, "The applicant must apply for a special permit."

I am writing to you in concern for the residents of Northborough; their safety and quality of life. What is concerning is the 130 Main St project proposal, which is zoned for Business East, not residential. The applicant must apply for a special permit, per the Northboro Zoning bylaw: “07-05-020." Yes, there are commercial buildings near this location. However, they have limited hours; they are not apartments. Apartments will change the overall dynamic of the Street. There will be more people in and out at all hours, adding lights that are a nuisance with added noise. The apartments will be 25 feet from a single family home with three young children. The builder proposes a 6-foot privacy fence; it isn’t private when you have 12-ft decks. I…
