Building a Healthy Northborough Gets New Website

The new initiative for the town has a sharp new website.

The Building a Healthy Northborough initiative began in 2008 as a collaboration between various officials from town, including the Health Agent Jamie Terry, Town Planner Kathy Joubert, Director of Family Youth Services June David-Fors and Director of Recreations Allie Lane. In January, Building a Healthy Northborough launched its new website, which the organization has been building for the past four months. Since its inception, the team has expanded to include representatives from family and Youth Services, Northborough's Extended Day Program and the coorination team from JSI Research and Training. Northborough Least Amount of Overweight Students, Says Statewide Report

Results from the Department Public Health reveal that Northborough's got fewer overweight kids than many other towns.

According to results of a Body Mass Index screening conducted during the 2010-2011 school year by the Department of Public Health, Northborough is among the towns with the least number of obese and overweight students. Nearly one-third of Massachusetts students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 are overweight or obese, revealed the findings, as reported in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. The Northborough-Southborough school district ranked at 23.3 percent, joining Harvard and Lunenburg as others with low percentages. "Our schools do promote health and wellness … so does the town," said Susan Whitten, principal of the Zeh school. You've Now Got a (Healthier) Northborough Baked Potato

Spearheaded by the town's health department, it is pushing ahead with some "Healthy Northborough" initiatives.

The Texas BBQ Company now offers a pulled chicken sandwich with one side that could include a light cuke salad, corn or pinto beans. And it's even now got the official Healthy Northborough Potato, a baked potato with low-fat sour cream and green onions. It's one of eight food establishments in Northborough that has signed on to take part in the Building a Healthy Northborough initiative, which has been driven by the health department. "More and more diners are asking for, and expecting, healthy options," said Health Agent Jamie Terry, who presented plaques to the participating restaurants at the Board of Selectmen meeting on Monday night.
