Large groups of labor and community workers are preparing to hold a Black Friday protest at several Walmart locations across the state this Friday, including the Walpole branch of the store, according to an announcement from Jobs with Justice. Friday's action comes just a month after delegations of concerned customers spread to locations across Massachusetts to demand an end to the store's retaliation against its employees, according to JWJ. Workers began taking action at warehouses and retail stories nationwide in October, speaking out against low wages, unsafe working conditions and Walmart's attempts to slice workers' voices on the job. The retail giant has already released its Black Friday sale circular online.
Shoppers in Massachusetts join Rhode Island and have to wait until after Thanksgiving to take advantage of Black Friday sales at retail giant Walmart. While Walmart locations across the rest of the country will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Massachusetts and Rhode Island’s Blue Laws prohibit the store to open that early in those two states. Instead, Walmart will open at 1 a.m., which is also the time many other retailers, including Target, plan to open for business on Black Friday. Shoppers don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to find out about the Black Friday sales at Walmart. The company already has released its circular for the sale. CocoBeni Confections, "Gourmet Cupcakes with a Homemade Touch."
CocoBeni Confections, a gourmet bakery, opened on November 1st in the Northborough Plaza. Owner Mary Beth Benison say's that she loves the idea of making something that people really enjoy, taking pleasure from what she has created. The store specializes in gourmet cupcakes, cookies and cakes "made to order." She's especially proud of her Double Chocolate cookies, made with a "special French cocoa powder." Our Northborough Patch photographer claims that their Mudpie cupakes are, without question, the best that he has ever eaten. Data from the official first days of the holiday shopping season show higher than ever retail sales.
Kohl's and Toys R Us in Northborough Crossing opened at 1 a.m. early on Black Friday and Wal-Mart began its day at 4 a.m. Michele Kershaw, a bargain-savvy shopper, was at Shops Way early, "I went to the new Kohl's at 12:15 [a.m. and] waited in line for 45 minutes to go in. [It was] well worth it. [I] spent $207 and saved $288 plus I have $60 in Kohl's cash to use this week." She apparently wasn't the only person taking advantage of the holiday weekend deals. CNNMoney reported that "Retail sales on Black Friday climbed 6.6 percent this year to an estimated $11.4 billion, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks foot traffic at malls and stores.
