UPDATE: Where in the World (In Northborough) Is This?

This bell once sat in a steeple, which was knocked over in a hurricane. It then provided refreshment for horses.

UPDATE: You got it. This heavy, slightly-rusty bell sits on the lawn of the Northborough Historical Society on Main Street. Bob Ellis from the Historical Society tells us that it was once the bell in the steeple of the building when it was the First Baptist Church, and when the church had a steeple. "It lost its steeple in the 1938 hurricane," said Ellis. "Long before that, however, the bell developed a crack, didn't ring properly, and was taken down. It was inverted and placed near the juncture of South and Summer Streets, where it served as a source of refreshment for animals, particularly horses. I'll take a stab. In 1921, this may have been the story: When the Baptist Church (now housing the Northborough Historical Society) was erected, in 1860, the bell that had done service in the old church was thought to be too small for the new church.
