The school year is almost officially at the halfway mark and the year continues with students fundraising for a cause, watching an awesome puppet show, discussing anti-bullying, walking to school, and adding a little drama to the day.
Spirit for Haiti: Marking the second anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, four fifth grade students at Proctor School facilitated the Spirit for Haiti fundraiser for the month of January. Katelyn Reynolds, Lauren Earley, Katherine Lee, and Tyler Potter have been the key organizers for this event. They coordinated everything including all publicity. Assisting the people and children of Haiti is not a new thing for two of the girls. Earley’s family currently sponsors a little boy in Haiti who is an orphan and Reynolds’ mother is a nurse who travels to Haiti once a year for about two weeks with Partners in Development. Fifth graders at Peaslee recently did some star gazing, some parents are gearing up for Kindergarten registration while others can attend a college planning presentation, and one fifth grade student is fundraising to replace trees at Zeh.
Starlab Visits Peaslee: Who says it needs to be night-time to view the wonders of the sky? Peaslee School fifth graders, who are beginning their astronomy curriculum, recently had the classroom opportunity to see what the January sky looks like thanks to the Boston Museum of Science’s Starlab, an inflatable and portable planetarium. Mike Adams, the Starlab host, had one class at a time crawl into the dome shaped planetarium to “view what’s in the evening sky right now—moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mars as well as some constellations like the Big Dipper.” “There are thousands of stars that are able to be seen with the naked eye,” said Adams, “and we use constellations (star patterns) as a map to find other things in space.” Starlab enables students…
