Warming up to the Northborough Historical Society

I have a little bit of a love affair with history.  Antiques, dusty books, old buildings with creaky floors.  Where some people thrill at the idea of a week long vacation at the beach, I thrill at the idea of exploring libraries, antique shops and museums for my days off.  So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that there was a local historical society in town and they regularly host guest lecturers.  Oh, and did I mention that this was free to the public?

I just got back from tonight's lecture.  It was great.  I have to admit, as much as I love history I wasn't all too sure what to expect.  The term "Historical Society" brings to mind a room full of prim and proper women in floral dresses, sipping tea whilst discussing the lineage of their great families.  I admit it, I've watched too many movies because tonight's group was nothing like that.  At all.  The wonderful members of the Northborough Historical Society were warm, welcoming, and eager to share their love of history with others.  I had stepped into a room with people just like me.  All ages were represented as well from a teenager to senior citizens, the room was filled with people who wanted to hear our guest lecture speak.

And speak she did!  We were "edu-tained" by Historical Interpreter Patricia Perry and her program "Oh Baby, It's Cold Outside".  It was fantastic.  Patricia, dressed in period costume, explained how early Americans survived the cold and harsh winters that preceded electricity and central heat.  It was great fun!  We were able to look at antique items that had helped warm our ancestors and learned some interesting (and entertaining facts) about life before the modern conveniences we take for granted.

I left tonight's program feeling like I'd made a room full of wonderful friends and I will definitely be dropping by for next months' program "History of Civil War Songs".  The Northborough Historical Society has made this new mom in town feel right at home!!
