5:34 p.m. Cecelia D'Entremont has been an election worker in Northborough since 1970. This has been one of the busiest elections she has seen. "There's a lot riding on this," she said. "People are just coming in droves." At 6:30 a.m., there was a line out the door at Proctor, which is Precinct 1. At 5:34 p.m., the count was at 1,763 and quickly rising.

5:07 p.m.: "Oh my God, we were slammed by the time we opened at 7 a.m. solid through 10:30 a.m.," said Maureen Walker, warden for Precinct 2 at the Peaslee School. Walker said poll workers have been concentrating during the lulls in entering absentee ballots, which require "two sets of eyes" to put them through the machine. Walker added that 33 inactive voters had come through the door, which is a large number. Walker has been working at the polls since 1980, and said this is by far one of the "biggest turnouts," though "four years ago was big, too. Nobody can sawy people don't care. They are out here making an effort." At 5:07 p.m., the count at Peaslee was 1,739.

3 p.m.: Dean Cavaretta arrives at the Kane School in Marlborough to greet voters, and then will head to the Conant Elementary School in Acton.

12:20 p.m. Andy Down, town clerk, takes a break after a lengthy call to deal with someone complaining that the poll lines are too long. "They complain about lines to vote, but people will wait in line for an iPhone," laughs Dowd. His office has fielded a barrage of calls for weeks, and it was fairly constant still this afternoon. Most are calling to ask about polling locations and to make sure if they are registered (yes, many wait until today to ask). Interesting note: the day begins with the Northborough Police Department picking up the ballots at the town hall at 6 a.m. along with the voting machines, and they are transported, in sealed cases, in police vehicles, to the polling locations. The same occurs when the polls close. Dowd said in his tenure as clerk (which is since 2004) they've only encountered one recount, and that was the vote for the new Senior Center. The machine is 99.9 percent accurate. The only thing it misses is human error. "We're usually done by 10 p.m., if we get the tape results by 9 p.m.," said Dowd.

11:30 a.m.:  A husband and wife leave the voting booth, and prefer to remain anonymous. "We're absolutely decisive about who we have wanted to vote for, but we don't want to share that. We are hopeful he will win. But we're sick of the ads. They should have used all that money to help the people in New York and New Jersey."

11:25 a.m. Warden Doris Crossman at the Zeh School, Precinct 4, said a line was outside before opening, and there has "been a steady stream since." At this time, 907 people have voted at Precinct 2.

10:20 a.m.: Thanks to Hudson High School student Alex Brier, who helped Patch out with a failing internet connection.

10:15 a.m. Checking in at Chet's Diner, where diners chat with owner Jess Fidrych about .... politics ... what else? Carol and Gordon Kelly sit at a booth taking in a hardy breakfast before heading out to the Zeh School to vote. "We're voting for Romney and Scott, and have been for them since day one," said Carol. "Gordon was an independent but switched to Republican since Obama became president."

9:45 a.m.: Husband and wife David and Lynn Skinner left the voting booth, stopping at the bake sale in the lobby. "Well, we canceled each other out," said Lynn. David added, laughing, "She's called me an idiot once, and she worked on me a bit to change my mind. I've been on the fence on everything."

9:35 a.m.: Precinct 2 Warden Terry Crean said, "It's been very busy, and people are pleasant and happy to be here." At this time, 601 people had voted at Lincoln Street.

9:10 a.m.: Aaron Stein unloaded Harold Naughton signs from his car. "I was in the same Army unit with him," said Stein. "I've been a fan for a while, though."

9 a.m.: Margot Lee and Nancy Carens hold Scott Brown and Romney/Ryan signs outside the Lincoln Street School. "I've always been involved, even before I could vote," said Lee, who turned 18 in March. "It's important to be involved." Carens added, "We got one senior citizen giving us the finger."

8 a.m.: Dean Cavaretta "enjoyed greeting voters and volunteers at all three polling places in Westborough this morning," according to his campaign manager Myles Goldman. "This includes talking with volunteers at the Mill Pond School (precincts 4 and 5) in Westborough.  He is extremely excited by the high voter turn-out we have seen so far. He believes this high voter turn-out shows that voters agree with what he has been saying all along, which is that 'this is the most important election of our lifetime.'"   

7 a.m.: Polls opened, with a solid line of people heading in to Lincoln Street until about 8 am.

6:30 a.m.: Folks waited outside Precinct 2 at Lincoln Street School to get in to vote.
