Northborough PD Earns 3 AAA Awards

Officer Jeremy Trefry is AAA's Traffic Safety Hero of the Year.

Northborough Police Officer Jeremy Trefry "has an unbelievable ability to detect impaired operators," Northborough Police Chief Mark Leahy says.

In 2013, Trefry made 25 drunk driving arrests, Leahy told selectmen Monday night.

And "I don't think there's any awards that he hasn't won" since joining the department in 2006, the chief said.

AAA's Traffic Safety Hero of the Year award was among three awards presented to the Northborough Police in December, Leahy said.

Trefry was recognized for his work to "educate and protect the citizens" of Northborough, the chief said.

"He's one of those people that is extremely self motivated. And he's also one of those folks that a lot of people may not be as familiar with. Because while the rest of us sleep, he's part of the team that's out there making sure the town is safe," Leahy said.

AAA also presented the department with its National Gold award, for "an all-encompassing overview of traffic safety programs"; and a pedestrian safety commendation for 11 years with no pedestrian fatalities, the chief said.

"We do take our crosswalks serious, and remind people that your kids and neighbors and everybody expects that when they step foot in a crosswalk that they'll be able to cross safely," Leahy said.

"You as a motorist always have an obligation to stop."

Leahy credited Sgts. Demosthenes Agiomavritis and William Griffin with the work that led to the National Gold award.

Agiomavritis wrote a grant for a crosswalk enforcement program this year supervised by Griffin, who oversees department's traffic safety efforts, Leahy said.

"We had decoy officers pushing baby carriages, walking across the street with bicycles. It was very well thought out," the chief said.
