Northborough Police issued 22 parking tickets during Saturday's Applefest Street Fair at Algonquin Regional High School because motorists created spaces, Police Chief Mark Leahy said Wednesday.
Two other large, unrelated events happening at Algonquin during the street fair contributed to the situation, he said: a doubles tennis event had "as many as 80 people," while an educator training program had 35 people.
The 22 tickets is "probably more than we typically do" during that event, Leahy said.
One ticket was for parking in a handicapped space, while the rest were "people who decided to create their own spaces," he said.
"Hundreds of people parked legally," Leahy said.
"The 22 who did not park legally took a calculated risk. They were clearly not in parking spaces."
The Applefest Committee arranged for four shuttle buses to five parking lots, Leahy noted.
