Your use of the expression "manhole cover" takes us back into a former world. Now they call such features "raised structures" or some other vague abstraction. "Manhole" is perhaps thought to be indelicate, perhaps sexist. Would  any woman want to go down a "manhole"? Could they be called "personholes"? Expressions like "raised structures" are idiotic, however.
