Northborough Remembers Phyllis Greene

A private graveside service will be held at Howard Street Cemetery, Northborough.

Phyllis Marie Greene, 90, of Portland, Maine, formerly of Northborough and North Brookfield, Mass., died on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the Barron Center in Portland.

Phyllis is survived by sons Mark E. Greene and his wife Linda, of Long Island, Maine and Sterling, and Joel P. Greene and his wife Ann Lisi of Worcester; a daughter, Susan Hutchinson and her husband Daniel of Waterville, Maine; a brother, Lloyd Momborquette and his wife Barbara of Scarborough, Maine, and their children, niece Linda Momborquette of South Portland, Maine, and nephew David Momborquette of New York City. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher (and Jill) Greene of Essex, Mass.; Alyssa (and Chris) Poulin of Cornville, Maine; Jeffrey (and Corinne) Greene of Charlestown; and Kieran Hutchinson (and Jake) Lahne of Burlington, Vt.; and five great- grandchildren, Orion Poulin, Sofia Greene, Jackson Greene, Tyler Greene, and Avery Greene.

Phyllis was born Sept. 1, 1923, in Worcester, and graduated from Classical High School in Worcester. She was the daughter of Alphonse Momborquette of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and Matilda (Gomez) Momborquette of Long Island, Maine. As the first grandchild of Antonio and Maria Gomez, Phyllis spent many summers with her grandparents on Long Island, Maine, surrounded by the eight Gomez siblings who were her aunts and uncles and who mostly lived or summered on Long Island. When Phyllis's mother purchased the Beach Avenue House on Long Island, she was able to bestow the same gift of Maine island summers on her children.

Phyllis married Edward Greene in 1945, later moving to Northborough. Edward died in 1968. She was previously a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Shrewsbury, and the Church of the Nativity in Northborough.

Phyllis worked as a teller at Westborough Savings Bank in Northborough and later at North Brookfield Savings Bank in North Brookfield. She retired in 1985 to Long Island, Maine, where she was able to spend over a decade volunteering for the Long Island Community Library and the Long Island Historical Society. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Long Island Memorial VFW Post 9605. She later lived in South Portland and Portland.

Phyllis's family is grateful for the care and support she received at Seventy-Five State Street in Portland and the Barron Center.There are no calling hours.

A private graveside service will be held at Howard Street Cemetery, Northborough. Memorial donations may be made to the Long Island Community Library, P.O. Box 252, Long Island, ME 04050, or the Long Island Historical Society P.O. Box 281, Long Island, ME 04050. Arrangements are in the care of the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.
