Born in Dartmouth on May 23, 1913, she was the daughter of Sarah and John Poole and the wife of Robert L. Read, who died in 1985. They met on Nantucket during the Great Depression and were married for 50 years. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Vernon and Milton Poole, and her sister Dorothy Poole.
She was an avid reader and bird watcher and loved animals. When her eyesight started failing, she enjoyed talking books.
Clever with a needle, she kept busy with knitting, crocheting, sewing, needlepoint and braiding rugs. During the years her husband operated the Natick Answering Service, she was his bookkeeper.

She is survived by her daughters, Marcia Read of Natick, and Barbara Evans of Ashland, four grandchildren; Cheryl Smith of Marshfield, Mark Evans of Gloucester, Paul Evans of Oakham, and James Evans of Ashland; one great- grandson; Daniel of Northborough; a great-great grandson Ian; and her beloved dog Bella.
At Mrs. Read's wishes, funeral services are private.
