Minutemen Muster Field

This monument is located at the intersection of Church St. and Pleasant St.  It marks the location of the field used in colonial days for militia and minutemen training.   It may be hard to envision today, but this section of Northborough is a very large flat plain lying between Cold Harbor and Howard Brooks stretching as far as the Lincoln Street School.   This was originally called the Licor Meadow Plain in 1660 when Northborough was part of Marlborough.

From the website www.ushistory.org :  Although the terms militia and minutemen are sometimes used interchangeably today, in the 18th century there was a decided difference between the two. The Militia were formed to protect their towns from foreign invasion and ravages of war. Minutemen were selected from militia muster rolls by their commanding officers. Minutemen were required to be highly mobile and able to assemble quickly. Although today Minutemen are thought of as connected to the Revolutionary War in America, their existence was conceived in Massachusetts as early as 1645.
