Civil War Book Talk at Tatnuck Bookseller Aug. 3

From Schoolboy to Soldier: The Correspondence and Journals of Edward Stanley Abbot, 1853-1863 is the subject of an Author Event on Sat., August 3rd from 10 a.m. to noon at Tatnuck Bookseller in the Westborough Shopping Center.  Quincy Abbot will speak about his new book, a personal account of the short but meaningful life of a likable young lad who grew up in Massachusetts and died an officer in the Union Army.

In a journal entry of August 16, 1861, Stanley [as he was called] wrote: "I do not think I shall live many years, perhaps not months, for I have made up my mind to throw myself body and soul into this war…. If I do live, I shall accomplish what I aim at, a great name and great usefulness as a writer." He was wounded on Houck's Ridge near Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and died six days later. He was 21.

And now — 150 years after his death, Stanley has become the "useful writer" he longed to be, with a little help from his grandnephew Quincy Abbot who inherited his letters and journals in an antique, water-logged desk. Read excerpts from the book at www.fromschoolboytosoldier.com
