Selectmen Cancel Reliance's Package Store License

Lack of use, non-payment of renewal fee cited.

Northborough selectmen voted 4-0 Monday night to cancel Reliance Beer and Wine Inc.'s wine and malt package store license.

The license for 293 West Main St. hasn't been used in more than a year, Town Administrator John Coderre told selectmen during a public hearing on the matter Monday night at the Northborough Town Hall Offices.

Also, Reliance Beer and Wine Inc. did not pay Northborough's most recent renewal fee, Coderre said.

Kabir Saheb Inc. applied to have the license transferred, to open the One Stop Beer Wine and Cigar store there. However, on Dec. 2, selectmen voted 2-2 on the request.

That application is "no longer in process," Coderre said.

"The bottom line is there does not appear to be an imminent use of the license," he said.

The store has been closed since a July 2012 fire.

Selectmen discussed the license's status with Reliance officials several times since then, Coderre said.

Reliance officials notified Northborough officials "that they did not intend to be at the hearing," he said.

"Nothing precludes this current licensee or a potential tenant or anybody from applying" for the license, which Northborough can make "available to any applicant."
