3 Albums You Should Listen to This Week

Jon Gourd previews 3 upcoming albums, and talks about previous releases by each of the bands.

Rural Alberta Advantage: "Departing" will be released March 1st. The video for the first single, "Stamp" has already been released in advance of this long-awaited follow-up to 2008's critically acclaimed debut, "Hometowns," a beautiful collection of folky-electro-pop-Americana tunes. The band can be seen locally March 9th at The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge.

Drive-By Truckers: "Go Go Boots" will be released February 15th. Also released on the 15th will be the Barr Weissman-directed DBT documentary "The Secret To A Happy Ending," which chronicles the band's tumultuous 2005-2006 period that witnessed the departure of singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and the near disintegration of the band. "Boots" was recorded at the same time as last year's "The Big To Do" and sees the band focused less on making a straight rock album and more on capturing the more bluesy, soulful sound that typifies the Muscle Shoals region from which most of the Truckers originate. The album even includes two covers of songs originally written by Shoals' legend Eddie Hinton, including "Everybody Needs Love", which Amazon is currently offering as a free MP3 download.

The Mountain Goats: "All Eternals Deck" will be released March 29th. During most of the Mountain Goats 20-year career, they have consisted almost exclusively of one member, singer-songwriter John Darnielle, who gained notoriety for his remarkably lo-fi recordings, including recordings of entire albums on a boom box. The band's roster has expanded to three over the years, though, and Darnielle and his various collaborators usually use proper studios to record their very unique brand of folk these days. Locally, the band can be seen at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston on Friday, April 1st
