Fireworks Join Applefest Offerings

The festival runs Sept. 20 to Sept. 22.

There will be Saturday Night Lights at Northborough's 22nd Applefest.

Fireworks are new to the three-day festival, Applefest Inc. Committee Chairman Michelle Gillespie said Tuesday.

The display is part of an Applefest Concert and Barbecue sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Northboro Babe Ruth League, from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Algonquin Regional High School Athletic Field.

"Everybody wants to see them," Gillespie said of the fireworks.

Applefest runs from Friday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Sept. 22.

The festivities begin with an Applefest Dessert Bake-Off on Friday, Sept. 20, and end with a Taste of Northborough, and a Northborough Historical Society Museum open house, on Sunday, Sept. 22.

"It's a pretty diverse schedule that allows everybody a little bit of everything for everyone," Gillespie said.

The Friday events are:

  • Applefest Dessert Bake-Off, 11 a.m. to noon, Northborough Senior Center
  • Applefest Luncheon, noon to 1 p.m., Northborough Senior Center
  • "The Frisbee Guy," 6 to 6:45 p.m., Melican Middle School
  • Algonquin Regional High School varsity football vs. Marlborough, 7 p.m.
The bake-off features desserts made by senior center supporters and other community members, Gillespie said.

Three judges "decide on their favorite Applefest dessert," she said.

The parade returns after a year absence due to downtown construction, Gillespie said.

For people wanting to see several events, St. Mary's Credit Union is sponsoring two shuttle buses, she said.

Signs posted throughout town also will direct people, Gillespie said.

Saturday's turnout typically is strong.

"You could get upwards of 1,000 people to the parade. The street fair, usually you get a couple thousand, and the fireworks definitely will command several thousand," Gillespie said.

"The road race usually gets upwards of 500 runners."
