Deniz Pelevan and his brother delivered appliances for Dave Brown, who closed Brown's TV and Appliance in February, for more than ten years. So when Brown asked the Pelevan family if they had any interest in taking over the store, after a lot of contemplation, Deniz and his brother and father believed the store would be a good investment and opportunity. Dave Brown, whose family owned the store for 53 years, closed it in January, the result of a limp economy as well as a struggle to stay afloat after arson shut the place down for more than a year. The Pelevan family re-opened Brown's TV a few…

The plan was to open at least before summer ended. In an ideal world, that's when a frozen yogurt business would love to be in .... business. But after "typical build-out obstacles," YOWZA Yogurt Paradise will celebrate its "soft" grand opening on Oct. 20 and a grand opening Halloween weekend, calling it "Trick or Froyo." Scott admits his frustration with the delays. "The plan was to be open in the summer in the warmer months before school resumed," said Scott. "Most of the delay was at the beginning of the project in early June. Timing our project around vacations was a challange. We finally…

Just over 18 years ago, Starbucks had just purchased the Coffee Connection. John Parks figured it was the perfect time to open up a coffee bean roasting business. Armeno Coffee Roasters on Otis Street opened on April 1 of 1994. The idea of starting a business from scratch was familiar to Parks. When he was a kid, his mom started a gourmet food business from some friends. Called A Moveable Feast, it was located in an old corner drugstore in Philadelphia. "I started working there when I was about ten," said Parks. "I worked for a couple of caterers in high school and college. I grew up in a …

A little more than 25 years ago, Pam and Joe Mondello opened up a small bakery on Main Street in Northborough. All the old time bakers told them they'd never make it. Now in its second location for 19 years, Festive Breads is one of the longest running businesses in Northborough, and Pam says she's had some of the same customers for 20 years. Festive Breads is not only a bakery, but a lunch spot and catering business. Gift baskets and trays, too, make up for a large chunk of its sales. The old timers probably wished they had asked what the Mondello's secret is. "Originally, we made three …
One day, in the early 2000s, Brian Russell, DM, was in a chain store. An elderly lady was in the same aisle, looking for assistance from a clerk on buying a device to back up photos of her grandchild. That clerk, Russell said, was insistent on selling the woman a 1TB hard drive, which at the time cost $219. "She asked again and again wasn’t there something less expensive for her to use," said Russell, "and the clerk geeked out on her and started talking to her about RPMs, the drive and data transfer rates. I heard about all I was willing to listen to and stepped up and asked the woman how …
