On the Mat with Algonquin Wrestling

Algonquin Wrestling is a developing team.  We have some very accomplished athletes and two young coaches who lead the team with enthusiasm and knowledge.  While not as well known as other sports in the area, wrestling is a great form of exercise and helps to develop self confidence and character.  Follow our blog to get the most up to date information on our team.  Hopefully you will be inspired to come out and check us out.

On Saturday Algonquin (6-7) beat Springfield Cathedral (33-12) and Sabis Charter (48-18). The Tomahawks lost to Minnechaug (39-36) and West Springfield (46-22). Senior Christian Saccone at 120 pounds, freshman Austin Roche at 113 pounds, and
junior captain Joe Cozzolino at 126 lbs. all went 4-0 for Algonquin. Senior captain James Officer went 3-0 at 285 lbs. for the Tomahawks while
junior captain Alex Mazzola went 3-0 at 170 lbs. and 0-1 at 182 lbs. for Algonquin.
Other wrestlers securing wins were Nick West, Ezrah Itkowsky, Nate Morrell, Chris Steidler, Mike Ryan, and Sam Schick.

On Sunday two freshman attended the Annual Freshman Tournament at Brookline High. Austin Roche placed first in the 113 pound weight class pinning all three opponents and Wes Faria went 1-2 for the day.

The Algonquin wrestling team has been on the road all season thus far, but will be home this Saturday for a quad meet versus Lincoln-Sudbury, Natick, and Waltham. The event will be held at 10:00am at Algonquin High School. Come cheer on the wrestlers on as they go up against some strong opponents. They will also be home for their last two dual meets of the season on Wednesday January 23rd and 30th at 6:30pm vs. Hudson and Marlboro respectively.
