Wegmans Aftershock, Northborough Opening Breaks Records

Roads leading to Shops Way to Northborough Crossing were backed up for 45 minutes on Sunday. Still, there's a steady stream of visitors to the new store.

Wegmans openings are always a big to-do. But the on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Northborough was the biggest Wegmans opening to date, breaking its previous record. In Feb. 2004, the Wegmans opening near Dulles Airport in Virginia brought 20,000 through its doors, lodging a new record for the business. On Sunday, in Northborough, 25,000 made their way to the opening.

"We are thrilled with the welcome we received from the Northborough community and from folks who traveled from Worcester, Boston and even over state lines for our opening," said Jo Natale, media relations for Wegmans. "It exceeded our most optimistic projections."

A number of selectmen from town made the trip to the store, including Chairman Jeff Amberson. "Everything up there is amazing," he said. "We were up there earlier in the day, and I talked to someone who drove all night from Erie, Pennsylvania...to see a grocery store, and my wife could barely get me to drive three miles. But it really is something. Wegmans has lived up to its billing. At first, I admit that I was skeptical that it was hype. But this will be great for the town."

Worcester resident Michelle Hoey said the trip on Sunday felt like shopping the day after Thanksgiving, "but for food." She describes Wegmans as an upscale grocery store that is more affordable.

"They have a large area set up with prepared meals," she said,"which is a great option for the working family instead of fast food. They offer a sushi bar, which my friend said tasted awesome, and a Middle Eastern, Asian and gourment cheese section, to just to name a few. Their beer and alcohol section is gigantic. I was impressed with the gluten-free and organic selection; It is the largest selection I have seen in any store. Last, and most important to me, was how friendly and helpful the staff is. They were literally at every aisle directing traffic throughout the store and all with big smiles. I hope this continues because to me customer services either makes you or breaks you."

Spokespeople would not disclose exact numbers, but said, "It was also the biggest day in terms of sales."

Natale said she is unaware that the store ran out of any products on Sunday, but "would be surprised if we didn't run out of something! No worries. We have daily deliveries to our stores. Everything is replenished overnight."

And the pace continues, said Natale.

"It's not quite as crowded as Sunday, but still very busy."
