Tomahawks Tumble to State Title

Algonquin Girls Track finishes fast at state meet.

Gymnasts finished a perfect season last night at Shrewsbury High School.  With a true team effort, the Tomahawks seeded second, vaulted their way to the school's first gymnastics state title since 1994.  Algonquin not only won, but bested 2nd place Wellesley by almost 3 points.  Top seeded Acton- Boxborough finished 3rd.

"This is amazing," stated head coach Amelia Davis. "It was a true team effort.  We came out strong and were solid on all four events.  This is an incredible accomplishment."

Algonquin was led by its two all-around competitors, Chloe Herczeg and Captain Amanda Hubley. Both produced huge scores on the vault, beam and floor to propel ARHS to the team title.

Herczeg, competing in the all-around for only the second time this year was asked to step up and do the uneven bars.

"Everyone has had a great meet," she said. "I feel great, but the whole team performed and stepped-up tonight. Win or lose, we left everything out there on the mat.  We have nothing to regret."

Also chipping in big performances for the T-Hawks were sophomore Alissa Wood on the beam, bars, and floor, Kate Gothing on the beam, and Abby Campbell on the floor.

Algonquin was invited to compete at the New England Meet on Saturday, March 12th.

Meanwhile, at the MA State Track Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, the Algonquin Girls Track team was turning heads of their own.  Senior Haley Laird finshed 2nd in the state in the high jump clearing 5'4" on her first attempt.  Speedy sprinter Haven Jones finshed 6th in the 55meters in a time of 7.41, and then came back to anchor the 4*200 meter relay team to a 4th place finish along with Paige Livolsi, Megan Davis, and Gaby DiGiovanni.  All top six finishers qualified to the New England Meet next Friday, March 5.
