Tomahawk Girls Track Dashes Past Doherty and North Middlesex

The high jumpers and sprinters sweep events.

It was business as usual as the girls track team improved to 3-2 on the season easily besting both Doherty (66-25) and North Middlesex  (73-18) in a tri-meet at Fitchburg High School yesterday morning.

Senior Frankie Mueller started the meet strong with a win in the 2mile(13:01) against both teams, and the Tomahawks never looked back. "My time was a little slow today," said Mueller."But, I'm coming off being sick so I'm happy with my race."

The Tomahawks continue to be impressive with their dominance of the sprints and jumps.  The sprinting trio of Haven Jones (7.3), Megan Davis (7.5), and Gabrielle DiGiovanni (personal best-7.7) finished 1-2-3 in the 55 meters.

Meanwhile, the high jump trio was busy recording a 1-2-3 sweep of their own.  Leading the way for the jumpers was Captain Hayley Laird (5'2"), second place  Emily Mauro (4'10") and third place freshman Bridget Owen(4'6").

Other impressive performances included sophomore Brenna Stewart's first career win and personal best time in the 300 (45.7). She led another event sweep with Paige Livolsi and Colleen Caty finishing second and third respectively.

"I'm a little nervous," said Caty while warming up for her race. "I have not run the 300 since Freshman year, but I'm excited to see how my speed is. I've been doing mostly distance -type workouts."

Junior Emily Polonowicz finished first in the shot put with a huge two foot improvement with a personal best throw of 29'3.75."

Coach Kristen Bakanowski was more than satisfied with her team's performances.  It was also a good day to try out different girls in new events and not have to worry too much about the score.

"I think we had a great meet," she said. "We have some people sick and on vacations, so it was a good chance to move athletes to different events to see what they can do. It was fun to switch it up today."

Lauren Connor was outstanding for North Middlesex running away with the mile in 5:51.0.  While Doherty's Liz Pellegrini (1:49.o) won the 600 meters  just edging out Algonquin's Emily Brown(1:49.3).

Algonquin closed out the meet with wins in both relays.  The Tomahawks travel to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston for the MSTCA State Division 2 Relays next Saturday.
