Scott Brown Will Not Run for U.S. Senate
Who do you think should be the Republican candidate?
Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State.
Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race.
Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December.

I agree, but now he may just run for Gov when the time comes.

I know. The honesty of the native american Lizzy Warren was refreshing. I love it when a lily white person who gets where they are by claiming to be a minority and using affirmative action lectures me.
We need another Senator who killed a woman (kennedy) or tried to skirt $700k in taxes by docking his yacht in RI (Kerry) or maybe a possible senator in Ed Markey, someone who doesn't even live in MA (he lives in chevy chase maryland full time)
I want more democrats like obama who want to raise my taxes again. The payroll tax increase obama gave me and everyone else was sweet. We need to punish all citizens with higher taxes.

No Republican should run.

McRib, I disagree. Who once said, A party in power for too long is corrupt." There must always be a two party presence. How about Charlie Baker? He appears to be an honest man.

I agree Colleen, I wish he was running again. We do not need another Democrat in the Senate.

US Rep. Stephen Lynch could do a good job. He's late in the game and needs to reach out to Central MA quickly. Lynch doesn't always vote with his party. Is he best at representing the 8th?

Lynch is certainly better than Markey but look at the score card of votes by liberal and conservative groups. Every D in the federal delegation votes with the D position 92% of the time or more (literally). Lynch is less partisan but only very slightly.
Lynch is much brighter and a much better person, more honest, etc. Markey is a lifelong hack. He's 66 and has been a congressman since 1976. He does even live here. He has a $2 million dollar house in Maryland as his residence.

Oh God, MB knows who is a "better person". Is that a magical power? Is it a Republican thing? And no modesty about it, either. You could make a lot of money. And the proof of Markey's evil is the value of his house. Talk about hacks...

We need balance in this state. Let's hope a republican candidate can bring some common sense to the senate. More liberal tax and spend democrats is not the direction we need to go. This state is obviously full of either the very wealthy who do not care how much taxes they spend, or people with their hand out waiting for government to save them. Can the working class people get some representation. I do not care if it is an independent, I would love to have a voice.

We definitely need him as governor. With a democratic majority of reps and a democratic Gov there's no checks, no balance.

I say take a break, Scott, and run again in 2 years - that's when Kerry's seat is up for re-election anyway. And thank you for your service to our great Commonwealth!

Another thing about markey. His pet issue is cable as he is on the telecom committee and was chair and higher up often. He and his bills are why cable is very expensive. His legislation has skyrocketed the prices.

Disappointed that Scott Brown chose not to run, but can understand. Sorry but I think Markey's been living in Washington too long (since 1975!). I'm sure it's not a good reason for some folks if we compare him to other lifers. It's time for some new blood. I'd like to see a Lynch vs Weld match up. Both have been known to cross party lines, need more of that.

I'm surprised no one here has called out Bill Weld's name yet. I've been trying to figure out why he moved back to Massachusetts unless it was to run for the Senate. He's already been governor, so I'm guessing that isn't of primary interest to him.
I think Scott Brown has good reason to not want to get into another short cycle election race. For one thing, if he loses the race, it may cost him too much in political image. For another, I'm thinking he might be more interested in governor at this point.
If I were the Republican party chair, I think I would be trying to get Weld into the Senate and Brown into the governor's seat. Charlie Baker is also a viable candidate, so I think he gets a say here as well.
Looking beyond the Republican party, I think Lynch could represent the state well in the Senate. Although I'm sure I wouldn't agree with all of his positions, I trust him to vote things the way he truly sees them.

Right on the mark Micheal Barrett! Elizabeth Warren was hand picked by obama and his entire machine went towards getting that "I know better than you" candidate elected. Disgusting.

Everyone seems to be looking at this race in two dimensions, Democrats and Republicans. How about an Independent candidate? Someone without ties to either party who would run on the issues, not who they are most likely to vote with. Also, with Gerry Leone entering the Democratic primary, this is going to get interesting. Markey is the long-term Democratic hack. Lynch is the Union guy. Where does Leone fit in, if at all? On the Republican side, I don't blame Brown if he doesn't run. If they have a real, viable candidate then they should run him or her. But that person should not be looking to throw their vote 100% of the time behind Mitch McConnell, because the people of Massachusetts don't want that. They already sent Elizabeth Warren to Washington to be an obstructionalist to working together on solutions. We don't need a second one!!

It is inaccurate to state that those who voted for Elizabeth Warren sent her to Washington to "be an obstructionalist to working together on solutions". Just thought I'd point that out... Don't you care about accuracy? You should stop summarizing if you can't do it accurately and fairly...

From the little research I done to date on both democrat candidates I'm leaning towards Markey. Reasons: Mackey’s focused on energy policy. He serves on two energy committees and is the former chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. These are issues I also champion. Lynch is a champion of labor unions and manufacturing and is also more conservative in social issues than Mackey. Lynch voted for the war in Iraq and the serge in Afganistan . Mackey is a champion of waxing issues while Lynch waning issues IMHO.
