UPDATED: Natural Gas Leak on Otis Street Fixed

Two houses and two businesses on Otis Street were evacuated Saturday morning after a contractor ruptured a high-pressure natural gas main. The gas leak was stopped by noon.

Updated: NStar stopped a leak in a high-pressure gas main on Otis Street by 11 a.m. Saturday. The area has now been reopened for residents, and Berberian's Farm stand reopened.

Power did not have to be cut off to the Armeno Coffee Roasters building, said Northborough Fire Capt. Robert Theve.

Original post: Northborough Fire personnel evacuated two houses and two business on Otis Street Saturday morning following a gas main rupture.

A contractor digging a sewer trench for the Wal-Mart expansion struck the high-pressure, natural gas line about 8:14 a.m., said Northborough Fire Chief David Durgin.

The leak was visible at 9:45 a.m., as NStar was preparing to shut off the sources to the line. Two houses in the area were evacuated, as were the Berberian's Farm stand and Armeno Coffee Roasters.

Electrical power was shut off to the coffee business to avoid any chance of ignition, Durgin said.

He could not estimate when the gas leak would be stopped, or a fix completed.

Police are redirecting traffic away from the location.

Northborough Patch will provide updates as they become available.

I sure hope Walmart recompenses Berberian Farm and Armeno Coffee Roaster for what could be several days of lost business, considering that they have already slowed traffic to these small businesses for over a month at the peak of their sales season.

Today and tomorrow would be great days to support Beberian's.

I love Berberians. Great produce at great prices employing local kids! I make a point to support local.
