Northborough Economy Better Than National Rates

Northborough and other MetroWest communities have positive trends in the job market.

If you visit job search sites such as indeed.com, it reveals that right now, employers in Northborough are looking for a massage therapist, an independent sales representative, a network administrator, a veterinarian, a Yii programmer and a large number of manufacturing laborers and retail personnel from the associate level to manager.

This site, even just months ago, may not have offered nearly as many choices for job seekers. According to Sperling's Best Places, a website that compares housing markets, costs of living, economies and other data in United States cities and towns, Northborough's numbers showed a jobless rate of 6.9 percent in September 2011. However, the data shows a 1.02 percent increase in available jobs between September 2010 and September 2011. In contrast, over the course of the same 12 months, there was a 0.12 percent decrease in employment opportunities nationally.

Northborough also ranks above the national future job growth prediction for the next ten years at 35.14 percent. The same forecast for the nation is 31.25 percent. These numbers are based on expected economic growth, population fluctuations and other factors.

One of largest growth markets in Northborough was manufacturing. According to SimplyHired.com, a job search engine, Northborough job listings show that software makers, hospitals, retailers and pharmaceutical preparation are currently hiring the most workers.

The national job market improved in the third and fourth quarters of 2011. There were 200,000 jobs added in December alone, lowering the unemployment rate in the U.S. from 8.7 percent in November to 8.5 percent one month later.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported recently that the state unemployment rate has decreased from 7 percent in November 2011 to 6.8 percent as of January 2012.

Since the economic crisis began in 2007, Massachusetts has consistently shown stronger development and an unemployment rate below that of the nation.

The Worcester area had an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent in November 2011 down from 7.3 percent in October 2011 and considerably lower than its rate of 8.6 in October of 2010.

Workforce Central is a federally and state-funded Massachusetts One-Stop Career Center that provides employment services for both job seekers and employers.

"The MetroWest job market has been holding steady for awhile," said McCarthy, "The location of the towns near the Massachusetts Turnpike and [Interstate] 495, the high-tech businesses, hospitals, hotels and colleges help strengthen the economy for this area."

McCarthy said that he sees open job requests for everything from entry-level retail positions to highly-skilled technical and manufacturing jobs in the Metrowest area, including Northborough.

"Manufacturing jobs in turn generate more openings in retail, food and other service industries," said McCarthy.
