Hurricane Sandy's Local Wrath Expected Monday Morning

There is a high wind watch in effect Monday morning through Monday night.

The latest forecasts show Hurricane Sandy hitting before the morning commute tomorrow, with high wind and flood watches in effect from Monday morning through the night.

The National Weather Service issued the warnings for Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

WHDH's Jeremy Reiner said the worst of Sandy should be from 9 a.m. Monday until 2 a.m. Tuesday. "Within this period is our greatest risk of wind damage/power loss," Reiner wrote on his blog, noting that many towns will experience wind gusts over 40 miles per hour. Coastal cities and towns may see wind gusts between 50-60 mph and even some wind gusts near 70mph out on the Cape and Islands.

Reiner said the speed of the wind isn't as great a concern as the duration of the wind, expected to last over several hours and possibly bring down trees and power lines.

Rainfall looks manageable, Reiner said, with most towns looking to pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain through tomorrow night.

Hi, someone asked that on FB. Haven't heard anything about a cancellation. My guess is they will make that decision early Monday morning, like they do for winter storms.

Thanks Tyler, you beat me to it! The superintendent just put out an Alert Now message.

Beginning to regret downloading the App. Getting multiple (and loud) alerts every few hours for the last few days that a storm is coming. Getting annoying.

I changed it to just check cell towers for alerts.. that cut it down a bit. Not by much though.

Still no word on school or trick-or-treating for Northborough. The last we heard, late last night, the superintendent was still waiting on it. We'll update you as we know, as always.

Still no OFFICIAL word from Framingham Public Schools, who traditionally do not close; but there is a new superintendent.

Many of you know with 50% of the town without power and a couple of schools on generators, Framingham opened schools after Irene, as if it was business as usual.

When we get any official word, we will post here.

All mass schools closed per Deval. Why wouldn't this automatically be the case since he declared a state of emergency in the am?

TBH, from what I understand (Framingham used as an example here), schools do not have to accept the governor's recommendation. During Hurricane Irene, the governor did something similar, and Framingham stayed open. We'll update as soon as we know of new closings that are relevant to our readership.

Yes, Danielle - that is the case. TBH - the governor "asked" that businesses and schools close, or rather strongly urged them to. We reported it after the superintendent officially announced it. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the clarification. It still seems crazy to me that we could have a state of emergency and kids would still be boarding the busses...
