Northborough Recreation is opening up its new venture called the Bearfoot Music Series, a series that features local and regional artists at a coffeehouse at the Senior Center.
Stefelia's Stone opens the long-awaited series.
Formed by well-known local singer-songwriters Carrie Rowan and Adrienne Fawkes, the duo has been playing music together for years, but sporadically.
"We'd share a show here and there, but always pursuing our individual singer-songwriting careers," said Rowan. "Then last winter after a really great show where we had collaborated more on each other's songs, we received such a positive response, we thought, 'hey, we should be an official duo.'"
Stefelia's Stone plays a "melodic, gorgeously harmonic mix of folk and pop that flirs with a fleck of funk."
"Mostly, we have a lots of fun creating and playing music together," said Rowan. "The synergistic effect of two female singer-songwriters coming together to form something totally new is truly inspirational and empowering. We both draw from different backgrounds and styles that fuses a more diverse story and sound which can touch even more listeners. And we are having a blast doing it!"
The duo is heading back into the studio in July to record its first CD together. Avoiding categorization, Rowan said the two just feel the inspiration and "trust the power of the muse."
"Heartfelt songs of hope and real emotion are what defines Stefilia's Stone," said Rowan, "and the feather light female harmonies that float the music up to heaven and remind us that angels really do exist."
The setlist consists of mostly originals, peppered with a few covers done the Stefelia way.
Now that it is an "established duo," Stefelia's Stone is hitting festivals, coffeehouses, showcases, cable shows and radio stations throughout the area. It also plays larger children's music venues.
"We play a lot of 'family' shows as well," said Rowan, "where we can combine both musical worlds (little kids and big kid music) in one fun concert that provides a niche concert experience that caters to all listeners of all ages. It's been a lot of fun traveling around New England to share our unique formula."
Details: Stefelia's Stone plays Friday, June 22, with a show from 7-9 p.m. Admission is $5, and treats from the Assabet Valley Regional High School culinary department will be available. The series is sponsored by LalaJava Coffeehouse and the Northborough Cultural Council.
